No Hunger Holidays

The Holidays Are Harder Without Food

The holidays are supposed to be a magical time. Instead, the season of joy is a season of hunger for the one in five American children. These are the children living with food insecurity, and don’t know where their next meal is coming from.

This time of year places a huge financial burden on families, and the stress of not having enough food can get in the way of celebrating. No child should go hungry, especially during the holidays.

Stories

For families living with food insecurity, this time of year is more stressful than magical. Every parent wants their children to experience the joy and wonder of the holiday season, but the extra cost of heating and winter clothing, plus rent, car payments, and, of course, food, take precedence over celebration. Too many children go to bed hungry, and without hope for the holidays.

You can help make a difference.

FAQs

Families facing food insecurity may be under increased stress due to many factors, such as seasonal job cuts, higher heating bills during the colder months, and increased illness with the changing weather. The lack of free school meals can also put an additional financial burden on families who need help to provide enough nourishing meals for their children.

Children are more likely to be food insecure if they are in a household headed by a single mother, if they have a disabled parent, or if they are members of a community of color. Nearly 35% of single-mother households and nearly 25% of Black and Hispanic households deal with food insecurity.

SNAP is the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. People who receive SNAP benefits can use it to buy groceries, seeds, and plants for food. SNAP cannot be spent on household items like cleaning supplies, vitamins, or diapers.

More than 22 million U.S. households use SNAP benefits. But parents and caregivers are also facing higher food prices. The cost of groceries has continued to rise, and a post-pandemic reduction in SNAP benefits has left many families struggling.

Caregivers with limited options for earning a living can struggle to keep enough food on the table for their children. Lack of reliable transportation to access the food resources available is another barrier families can face.

Some low-income communities lack stores that sell affordable food, presenting a challenge even for families that do have reliable transportation.

Feed the Children and our partners are fighting hard to create a world where no child goes to bed hungry, on a school day or any day of the year.
